| Where
can you find one of Britain's few remaining ice houses - and what exactly
is it?
You'll find it at Worden Park on the southern edge of Leyland and it is an 18th century freezer - an underground pit of lovely brickwork. The Lord of the Manor purchased ice, not so readily available in those days, to fill the pit and was then able to freeze fresh meat so that he always had a plentiful supply in store with which to impress his dinner guests. Other delights within this 157-acre park include a walled garden, a maze, a sunken formal garden and fountain overlooked by a magnificent conservatory. The parkland has Green Flag status and has lots of attractions for all the family, including an adventure playground, miniature railway, arboretum and mini-golf, and, housed within one of its historic buildings, the Worden Arts Crafts Centre, where local craftspeople can be seen at work. |
