It was the first town in Britain to use electric street lighting and the first town with an electric tramway. Blackpool is still electrifying.

Just take a look at the Pleasure Beach and the Tower after dark, the Golden Mile of amusement arcades, and the famous autumn illuminations - still "the greatest free show on earth." Glittering yet gross, traditional yet techno, Blackpool is the fun capital of Britain. But it's not enough for the entrepreneurs who run the resort's amusements. Europe's greatest amusement park, the Pleasure Beach, which boasts the world's tallest roller coaster, could soon be joined by Las Vegas style casinos and hotels with an ancient Egyptian theme. Blackpool is already established as the pink entertainment capital of Britain, headed by the outrageous Funny Girls transvestite showbar.

There's more to Blackpool than entertainment, however. It's home to several companies that export their wares round the world, with TVR sports cars possibly the town's most famous product. Business parks are mushrooming and a new football stadium is under construction. The town has its own airport and is the base for the helicopter fleet that services the Irish Sea gasfields. Blackpool's infrastructure is due for a revamp with £20 million in European regeneration funds.
