| Where
will you find one of England's few cathedrals not located in a city? In
Blackburn, a grand town, but not a city, despite having at its heart Lancashire's
only Anglican cathedral, a magnificent building with a distinctive Lantern
Tower containing stunning, modern stained glass. However, Blackburn has all the character of a capital place, in every sense of the word. During the Industrial Revolution the town's Exchange building was a major cotton trading centre, and even Blackburn's Town Hall, opposite the Exchange, bears an unmistakeable resemblance to the Mansion House in London. Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery, housed in a splendid Arts and Crafts style listed building, has fine collections of paintings, books, early textile machinery and much more. |
